When my office moved to a new building, I was a little bummed when I had to take down all my little cubie knick-knacks. Everyone used to come by and see my cubicle covered in “flair.” Including a Beta fish appropriately named, “Blog” and during Christmas, I tricked out my desk with lights, tinsel, and garland. I try to keep my cube as happy as possible. Surround myself with pretty pictures that make me smile as I spend a decent amount of time sitting in that chair.

The picture you see is me in my cubicle dressed like Rainbow Brite (hence the side pony tail, arm warmers and hair ribbons- I also had a matching belt and crazy leg warmers…) and peeing dog dressed as a hot dog. Yes, I brought her into work when she was a puppy for a half a day. I want to do good work, but I also want to have fun. So I’m gonna be me. You can’t exactly see my cube which is in front of me in the picture… but trust me it’s decorative. At the time this picture was taken, I had a pumpkin that I drew a face on for Halloween!
A cube is a cube. Boring, clinical, ugly. I recommend personalizing your cube. Don’t care about looking silly or “unprofessional.” I view my cube as my home away from home. My own little place at work. I have a corner completely dedicated to NYC and Broadway- especially Wicked- my favorite musical of all time. I have a Buckeye Football corner for my alma mater spirit. I have pictures of family, boyfriend, and friends. Anything that I can look up at and remind me to chill out and bring me back down to Earth when my head is up in the clouds or when I’m stressing out beyond belief.
What’s something you have in your cube or at your desk that makes you instantly feel better?

I had tons of crappy flair around my cubicle at work (before I stayed home with the younguns) and when I left on my last day of work, the retarded security guard poked through my box of dolls and cheap toys and said I need a F***ing property pass to remove them from the grounds. WTF! It’s a box of TOYS. Later on, my husband just smuggled it all out in a gym bag.

Right now I have the most beautiful flowers on the planet, thanks to my sweetheart. Under normal circumstances I have a fair amount of colorful flair and photos. AND my stuffed llama and flower. Not enough “junk” to be unprofessional, but certainly enough to show off my colorful personality and love of family, friends and animals.

This is the first time I’ve had an OFFICE and not a cube and, I have to say, it is not as festive. There is something fun about putting stuff up with push pins into a fabric wall. Now everything hung in here needs to be pre-approved and hung by the maintenance department. **pout**

Alice- I love it. That’s a little ridiculous that they wouldn’t give you your own stuff!? what the heck?
Lara- those flowers ARE gorgeous. and they smell so good!
TCD- pre-approved is overrated. I have a mousepad that says “the internet is for porn” from when I went to see Avenue Q. I try to cover it up when I have too… but I have to say I love it!
Oh and I also have magnetic poetry put downs! hilarious!

Working from home, the “stuff on the desk” think isn’t as big of a deal, but one thing that has helped is the hourglass I picked up from CB2 a while back. When the day seems to drag on and on, breaking it up into hour-long intervals can really help out.

I had tons of stuff decorating my cube back when I had one. I loved to decorate it and put up personal things… I still do that today with my office space. I have pictures and candles and stuff all around. We are getting new furniture soon so it’s a little scarce around here as far as decorations go… Can’t wait to put all my stuff back out!
Love the pic btw…too cute!

I’ve got a whiteboard that I write random poetry quotes on, and usually I pin up prints of my favourite webcomics (I’m geeky like that). Thing is, I temp/contract a lot, so I’m not often in one place long enough to warrant bringing in loads of stuff. Still, I do what I can!
